A view from Farmer's Korner: Summit High School

What do we know about Summit County’s “generation next?”

Unless we have kids attending classes in the Summit School District, it’s likely most of us haven’t a clue.

On Thursday, February 21st, 2008, Our Future Summit will host a public forum at Summit Middle School featuring a panel comprised of students from Summit High School. Summit School District climate & communications coordinator Julie McCluskie and SHS assistant principal Erick Finnestead will act as moderators. The panel will include: Nick Adolph, Jozy Gessner, Henry Martinez, Brittany Moore and Lizzy Shay.

The student panel will respond to a series of questions in three areas:

Summit High School
  • As Summit High School students, what has been your best experience at SHS?

  • How is SHS preparing you for your future plans and goals?

  • How does SHS mirror the greater Summit County community?  What similarities do you see?  What differences?

  • What are your hopes for the education of future SHS students in this community?

Summit County

  • As Summit County youth, what are the best aspects of growing up in our community?

  • What are the challenges for you growing up in this community?

  • Do you see yourself remaining in or returning to Summit County as an adult?  Why or why not?

  • If Summit County could do anything to improve the quality of teen life in this community, what would it be?

 The Future

  • What key challenges face you as an independent adult making it in this community? In the world?

  • How would you describe your generation – the youth of today?

  • What are your hopes for the world?

Don’t miss this opportunity to discover a personal side of education in Summit County and to understand what’s on the minds of our high school students and their mentors.

Should you have a question to pose at the forum, you may send your inquiry in advance to OurFutureSummit@aol.com.

The February 21st forum is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Light snacks and soft drinks will be available.

Our Future Summit is a “quality of life” institution dedicated to building a better Summit County by providing monthly opportunities for informed discussion on topics of interest to the community.
