Organizational Meeting

Silverthorne Library  2/10/05

Eileen: Develop in a manner that preserves Summit’s character

Corina: Address the homeless population in SC, possibly with a shelter

Linda: We need senior citizen housing, especially assisted living and associated nursing home perhaps in shared facility and possibly at site of current medical center which will be vacant after hospital opens. This would be a natural expansion from the hospital, would be available for short and long term stays, many services can be shared.

Gray: has developed Summerwood, over 300 projects including several very large projects.

He would like to see a new “blue collar” town in Summit at the Ute Pass road. This would include low end housing, basic services, and be associated with efficient transportation.

Gray would also like to see an emergency road from Wildernest bridging over I-70 to the Dam Road.

Sandy G.: wants to see Performing Arts Center - also, accountability of elected officials to their constituents

Tom: concerned about challenges regarding build-out in county

Robert: Education involving high school students in legislative and other county issues.

Also would like to support teachers by citizens going into classrooms and helping in a variety of ways.

Sandy B.: Would like to avoid problems like in S. Florida with sprawl.

Also sees that town income should be balanced with more property tax instead of just adding more retail to jump up sales tax.

Quite concerned re: I-70 congestion. We should pay commercial truckers not to drive on high impact days.

We need more creativity in addressing challenges.

Don: Research can help solve problems.

Jerry: Would like to see light rail but realizes this is very expensive.

Suggests we extend Route 285 into high country.

For education, would like to see the development of a historical interpretive park which would be marketed to school children and church groups.

Mike: Likes Robert’s idea of civic education for students.

In general, we should emphasize “collective good” for the county instead of “survival of the fittest”

Mary Ann: We should combine services of Silverthorne, Dillon and Frisco-one government, one police force, other districts as feasible.

Monorail between mountain towns, Silverthorne to Edwards.

We need to lessen dependence on tourism.

Shirley: environmental emphasis, with clean air, clean water, open space.

Combining towns is a good idea.

Paul (Bubba): Consolidating towns into the City and County of Summit would be a good idea

Standard rail would be a good solution to traffic congestion of I-70

Likes Robert’s ideas regarding education

Water—consolidation of towns would make negotiations with Denver Water Board easier.

Susan: Education needs to involve parents to a greater extent. Also like Robert’s ideas.

City of Summit

Light pollution, can’t see stars anymore, we need more efficient lighting.

David: greater development of the arts (David is an artist)

Barb: What is our legacy?

I-70 is a priority.

“home rule” rules! (this exists in Frisco and Silverthorne)

We need to fix problems with elections: polling places, update equipment; assure handicap access.

Marilyn: Affordable quality housing for middle class

Stewardship of natural beauty here.

Bill: More “Make a Difference” days (4/yr)

Involve students in the process of voting.

Be fair, equitable to tourists, e.g. don’t raise gas prices on weekends.

Yvonne: introduce businesses other than retai

Bob: Could Summit County unite on issues?

Nancy: New hospital brings corporate heavy-handed management

Old medical center could be assisted living/care facility.

Immigrant services should be a focus.

Carlos: How can we help to keep life wonderful here?

Don: 15-20 year visioning/strategic planning needed

How should w in the county design and manage services to help greatest #’s

Discipline and commitment will lead to success

Howard: How do we merge divergent ideas around the concepts of a new town (Ute Pass) and the city of the Summit?
